For the average Internet user, the deep web might seem like a strange and dark place. But there’s a lot more to it than drug deals, bitcoin assassins, or political whistleblowing.

As you may or may not know, the Internet you find through conventional search engines is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s out there. Although estimates vary, it’s believed that as much as 90 percent of the Internet can be defined as the “deep web,” only accessible through software like Tor, which allows for peer-to-peer connections.

It’s an alluring place, like the Wild West of the online world. Some even argue it is becoming a necessary place, as our online anonymity becomes threatened by increasingly pervasive Internet surveillance.
